The Best ofIntima & Swim Edit
Unveiled in 1997, Fruits de Mer is the result of founder Mr. Sato’s long journey through fashion, travel, and craftsmanship, guided by a clear idea: swimwear should express the body, not reshape it. Raised by a mother who taught fashion, Mr Sato grew up surrounded by clothing and learned to sew from an early age, first making pieces for dolls before moving on to his own garments. His interest in swimwear developed during his school years, but it was when he moved to Paris that his perspective truly took form.
Here, he encountered body-conscious fashion and a way of thinking centered on expressing the natural beauty of the body. His vision deepened through his exposure to Brazilian models, whose confidence and emphasis on individuality offered a striking contrast to more conventional beauty standards. Their approach, enhancing, rather than correcting, the body, became the foundation of his work.
Having returned to Japan he opened his first boutique in Kamakura, just steps from Yuigahama Beach, choosing the location for its accessibility from Tokyo. Initially imagined as a simple beachside shop, it has since developed into a destination for both local surfers and a growing number of international visitors.
A second space in Tokyo followed, with a more fashion-oriented positioning and close links to the creative and media industries. Here, natural light plays a central role and the large windows are key, allowing customers to see how swimwear looks in natural conditions, while the interiors remain simple and open, with playful seaside furnishings. The aim is to help each customer choose with clarity and confidence. Rather than following trends, the focus is on brands with a strong and consistent identity, often among the most established names in Brazilian swimwear. When it comes to bringing outstanding Brazilian creators to an international stage, Mr Sato reveals: “Expanding our reach and raising awareness of these brands isn't just a business goal for me, it's something I feel genuinely called to do”.
Each piece is carefully tested to ensure it enhances the body from every angle, reflecting a deep attention to fit and silhouette. This approach extends to exclusive tanga styles produced in Brazil through long-standing relationships, allowing the boutique to offer pieces that have become increasingly rare. Through this combination of expertise, sourcing, and personal vision, Fruits de Mer continues to express a distinct approach to swimwear, one rooted in confidence, individuality, and a natural connection to the body.
We love: The large windows letting natural light in giving the colorful items on display nearly an “aquarium” like feel.
