Nestled among the natural wonders of this small, enchanting island in the Bahamas, accessible only by boat from nearby Eleuthera, The Sugar Mill is far more than a boutique. It is a must-visit destination for travelers (and sailors) arriving in Harbour Island. Overlooking the bay, with views of boats coming and going from sunset to sunrise, the location reflects the life experience and vision of its founder. An education spanning Scotland and Boston, a modeling career between New York and Paris, and a background as a fashion and lifestyle entrepreneur that has since evolved into an ethical, conscious, and purpose-driven business approach. India Hicks moved to this beautiful island for love, and today, as a mother of five, she has been the heart and soul of The Sugar Mill since 2005.
Housed in a building with over 150 years of history, the boutique brings together cosmopolitan spirit and local roots, blending the best of international design with the charm of local traditions to welcome visitors from around the world. With an eclectic and cross-cultural eye, India and her partner Linda have shaped the store around a shared passion for uniqueness, creating a space where every piece tells a story. Far from being just a retail showcase, The Sugar Mill offers an emotional journey defined by attention to detail and a commitment to sustainability, reflected in a meticulous selection of brands that are inclusive yet exclusive, and nearly impossible to find elsewhere, sourced from every corner of the globe.
From Sea Level swimwear to Soler London's couture resortwear, from Moost Bags made of recycled plastic to hand-printed T-shirts and scarves created by local artists, not to mention the home textiles designed by India herself, the offering reflects a clear and considered design philosophy that is both refined and responsible.
What truly sets the boutique apart is its accessibility. There is no “typical” customer here, only unique and individual stories to be discovered, shared, and celebrated. This attention to others extends beyond the boutique itself. India actively supports international humanitarian causes such as Global Empowerment Mission and the Women Supporting Women program by The King's Trust Foundation, championing women's economic independence.
We love the exotic and tropical references, woven throughout the space through a thoughtful use of color and decorative elements, creating a true globetrotter mood.
