The Best ofIntima & Swim Edit
Goa has long been a point of arrival for Europeans drawn to India, with its mix of architecture, music, nature and cultural heritage. In this setting, Martino Caramia and Jagvir Matharoo have built a retail world with a strong sense of place and personality. Martino, a designer for more than three decades between Los Angeles and Ibiza, moved to India around 15 years ago. Jagvir, trained in fashion and experienced with European brands, brings a complementary eye for product and storytelling. Together, they founded The Flame Store, introducing to Goa a concept that now counts four boutiques and has become a reference for design-led retail.
Palais d’Orient, one of the two Flame stores in Assagao, welcomes visitors like a traditional colonial villa, with plants and terracotta steps softening the entrance. Inside, the experience unfolds through a sequence of rooms, each with its own rhythm, where fashion, objects and interiors are treated as part of the same visual language. Tropical wall motifs in saturated blues and greens set the tone, while patterned floors and artisanal details anchor the space. Vintage furniture, striped textiles and baroque-inspired mirrors introduce contrast, creating a layered aesthetic that feels eclectic yet intentional.
Large potted plants and filtered natural light reinforce the dialogue between the villa and Goa’s surroundings, while more focused lighting highlights textures, colors and materials across the different spaces. The result is an environment that invites exploration rather than directing it, encouraging clients to move freely between rooms and categories, discovering unexpected combinations. Racks of vividly colored garments interact with display tables, accessories and furniture pieces, blurring the boundaries between retail and lifestyle. The assortment reflects this approach. Alongside in-house labels such as Flame, Maison du Voyage and Palais d’Orient, the selection brings together independent designers with a strong point of view. Rather than following seasonal trends, Martino and Jagvir privilege pieces with character, craftsmanship and narrative value, building a mix that speaks to a clientele confident in its choices. The presence of objects and furniture further extends the store’s identity, turning it into a curated environment rather than a purely transactional space.
With plans to introduce bespoke collections and expand into Europe, The Flame Store is gradually translating its Goa-based universe into a broader lifestyle proposition, rooted in place yet designed to travel.
We love how tropical motifs and lush vegetation dissolve the boundary between inside and outside, turning the villa into a continuous, immersive environment.
