La Perla at New York Fashion Week

22 February 2017

On the 02/09/2017, a collection of top models, including Naomi Campbell, Kendall Jenner, Stella Maxwell and Isabeli Fontana, unveiled La Perla's latest winter collection in style at New York Fashion Week.

La Perla launched their first ready-to-wear collection for SS17, now for FW17-18, they have debuted their latest collection at February's New York Fashion Week where internationally famous models showed off the collection against a visually stunning backdrop.  Julia Haart, Creative Director at La Perla, was inspired by the motif of the British garden as interpreted by painters throughout history. A wide range of artists, such as Renaissance painters, Impressionists, Pop Art inventors, and Post-Modern rebels, have all seen the garden as a  site of consistent beauty. From the lush foliage of Pre-Raphaelite painter Lawrence Alma Tadema to the American modernist Georgia O'Keeffe, flowers reimagined by the artist's hand are the focal point of this collection.

La Perla's "lingerie expertise" can be found at the very heart of this collection. Julia Haart has continued to work on the fashion house's innovative construction technique, built-in lingerie. Introduced last season by the Corset Jacket, built in lingerie  adds enough support to garments that they no longer need to be combined with a bra. Find it throughout this season's collection in shirts, t-shirts, evening wear, dresses, sweaters and even delicate tank tops,  sized not only by dress size but also by cup size in order to offer the perfect fit. The Tailored suiting on offer in tartan and houndstooth creates an interesting contrast between the more traditional elements of British style to create a definitively feminine look.

Lace, which allows the body to move freely, is featured in both the ready-to-wear and lingerie collections. Delicate lace details are repeated throughout, from the pockets of wool trousers to the detailing on bras.  The bra is a central point of the collection's construction,  not only as a form of support but as an important design element which is featured in various ways, from peaking out from under suits to being built into gowns. However, La Perla's biggest achievement for FW17-18 is their Flexible Stretch French lace. They worked closely with lace makers in Calais, France to develop a Leavers lace that moves with the body, making it comfortable enough for everyday wear.

Julia Haart explores the garden theme with a range of eveningwear that is red carpet ready.  She places structured bustiers on the outside of slip dresses in order to play with our preconceived notions of modesty. The whole collection is complemented by shoes decorated with delicate, sculptural details and the two key handbags for the season:  the Ada bag, named after La Perla founder Ada Masotti, which is crafted from python and calf leather, and the 1954 bag, which features La Perla's signature suspender hook detailing.
