22 April 2026
Intima met with Nichole De Carle, in charge of the Bodywear Forum at Performance Days, to discuss the most compelling developments shaping next-to-skin innovation today. Her insights reveal a clear shift toward comfort-driven performance, material intelligence, and responsible design.
Innovation today no longer announces itself with noise. It settles quietly against the skin, felt rather than seen, working in small, intelligent ways that change how garments perform and how they are lived in. Across underwear, swimwear, shapewear, activewear, loungewear, and accessories, the most progressive developments share a common goal: to make performance feel effortless, natural, and deeply human.
What is emerging is a new generation of intimate apparel where comfort is carefully engineered, sustainability is built into the fibre itself, and design responds to the natural rhythm of the body. This is not innovation for novelty’s sake, but meaningful progress rooted in function, longevity, and emotional connection. These are the six most relevant directions to keep in mind.
1. Underwear: Cloud-Like Comfort, Engineered from Nature
Underwear innovation begins with the most fundamental expectation: it should disappear on the body. The newest developments celebrate next-to-skin comfort with innovative natural fibres, redefining what everyday softness can achieve.
Materials such as hemp and bamboo lyocell, Solucell/cotton, Seacell, and modal blends offer a new standard of performance, delivering moisture-wicking, quick-drying, antibacterial, and odor-preventing performance while remaining gentle and breathable against the skin. These fibres work with the body rather than against it, supporting comfort throughout the day.Surface and structure play an equally important role. Pointelle textures, ultra-fine fibres, and engineered two-way stretch create cloud-like softness, perfect recovery, and contour-adaptive fit. Lace is reimagined through performance, with lace-effect details, shiny yarns, and customizable mesh openings adding shaping, breathability, and subtle visual interest. At the heart of this evolution is responsibility. Biodegradability is a central focus, bringing sustainability and genuine material innovation into one of the most intimate categories in the wardrobe.
2. Swimwear: From Water to Motion
Swimwear is evolving beyond its traditional boundaries, becoming a hybrid category designed for dynamic, multi-purpose lifestyles. Today’s swim fabrics combine high-texture, inclusive 4-way stretch constructions with soft-to-skin, tactile surfaces that feel as good dry as they do in the water.Innovation is driven by construction. Custom 3D-knitted terry effects, aero-tech perforated blends, and revolutionary twist knits result in lightweight, quickdry compact fabrics that transition seamlessly from water to workout, beach to city.
Design intelligence is built into the fabric itself. Double-face body-mapping fabrics move naturally with the body, merging water performance with visual sophistication. At the yarn level, progress continues through low-carbon polyester from FENC x LanzaTech and post-consumer recycled fibres, paired with creative pigment printing, micro-stripes, and ton-sur-ton detailing to deliver conscious style without compromise.
3. Shapewear: Precision Performance
Shapewear is no longer about concealment. Today’s category is defined by adaptability, visibility, and precision engineering that supports the body in motion.Next-generation designs combine 37.5 Tricot with seamless edge integrity, delivering all-climate, 24-hour wear. Advanced fibre blends such as Ross-Shire Biodegradable PA/EA and Pbspan TPEE offer high elasticity, excellent recovery, antibacterial properties, and UV protection, ensuring durability and comfort over time.Sustainability is embedded into the system through cradle-to-cradle solutions built in via Noosla PLA chemical recycling. Comfort is further enhanced by ICEKYN cooling technology, while Series Synbio Weaving enables Biorhythmic Zoning for targeted, responsive support.Visually, shapewear steps into the light. Triangular light-reflecting yarns with double-knit technology create garments that perform at a technical level and are confident enough to be seen.
4. Activewear on Skin: Soft Power, High Intelligence
Activewear innovation is shifting toward softness, balance, and sensory comfort. Performance is no longer defined by rigidity, but by intelligent material harmony. The next generation blends natural and high-performance fibres with natural dyeing at the core. Innovations include textile-to-textile recycled nylon with Algae Ink printing and ALGADYE, created from certified toxin-free microorganisms, introducing colour through regenerative processes.Temperature control is central to comfort. Advanced thermal regulation technologies such as Outlast fabrics and phase-change materials help balance body temperature and reduce sweating, supporting performance across varying conditions.
Design expression comes through texture and touch. Twist-knit textures with suede-like finishes and Lavender Cooling Pointelle JSY in natural hues elevate tactility, while new Tencel-Modal blends deliver buttery softness, breathability, muscle support, and explosive performance. Activewear becomes something you live in, not just train in.
5. Loungewear: The 24-Hour Garment Reimagined
Loungewear reflects the most profound shift in how people dress today. Designed to move effortlessly from day to night, work to rest, these fabrics prioritize comfort without sacrificing function.Soft fibres such as modified PLA, PlaX, and Modal meet high-performance innovation in SMARTCELL and SEACELL, offering antibacterial, UV-protective, skin-friendly, and biodegradable properties. Hemp Lyocell adds breathable, hypoallergenic comfort that supports extended wear.
Intelligence is woven directly into the knit. LumenGrid Tech fabrics bring AI-powered intelligence to every knit, creating garments that respond to the wearer’s needs in real time. The result is loungewear that feels natural, effortless, and quietly advanced.
6. Accessories and Finishing: Smart and Adaptive
Innovation extends beyond the garment itself, shaping the details that define comfort, usability, and longevity.Accessories now combine lightweight, breathable mesh spacers for airflow and next-to-skin comfort, offering shape retention and quick moisture absorption ideal for bra cups and molded garments. Biodegradable cooling fortitube and elastics support bra development with reduced environmental impact.
Design expression continues through recycled silicone accents with ombré finishes, fluorescent Elastofix tapes, and magnetic closures, bringing adaptive, high-performance functionality into focus. Sustainability reaches the final touchpoint with smart packaging, including 3D-printed garment bags from recycled LDPE, recycled parchment swing tags, and waxed cotton strings, creating a fully biodegradable, eco-conscious system.
A New Definition of Innovation
What unites these developments is a shift in perspective. Innovation is no longer about adding more, but about refining better. It is quieter, closer to the body, and more aware of its impact.By integrating sustainability at the fibre level, designing with real movement in mind, and prioritizing comfort as a form of performance, the intimate apparel industry is redefining what progress looks like. These are garments that support the body, respect the planet, and fit seamlessly into modern life. That is the future of innovation. Felt first. Seen later. Built to last.
