MINDS BEHIND THE STYLES: Raffaela D’Angelo

04/11/2026

Textile Richness Meets Contemporary Elegance

An editorial series by Intima Media Group, in collaboration with MarediModa

Three-dimensional jacquards, raised embroidery, sheer effects and exclusive prints: for Raffaela D’Angelo, fabric is a medium for creative expression.
The Italian designer, who has made beachwear her specialty, embraces intricate techniques while preserving clean lines. She shares her thoughts on the fabrics and innovations that catch her eye, her approach to color and print, and the evolution of resortwear into an increasingly complete wardrobe. She opens Minds Behind the Styles, our new interview series featuring the personalities helping to shape tomorrow’s collections.

How did you become a designer?
I always knew this was what I wanted to do, so I pursued training that would prepare me for the profession. I developed a passion for fabrics and embroidery, and I was drawn to beachwear from the very beginning. After designing several collections as a freelancer for major brands, I launched my own collection.

Which fabrics excite you most right now, and why?
Those that manage to surprise us through innovation. I’m fascinated by lightweight fabrics, sheer effects, lace, macramé and three-dimensional embroidery, as well as techniques that add depth and texture to fabrics and open up new creative possibilities.

What is the most surprising innovation you have discovered recently, even if it is not yet ready for industrial production?
I’m particularly drawn to three-dimensional jacquard, which transforms fabric into a decorative, almost sculptural surface. I also appreciate openwork and increasingly elaborate appliqués.

Do you think bold colors are truly making a comeback?
Absolutely. Color plays an important role in my collections. Alongside more natural, sophisticated shades, we’re seeing growing interest in intense, vibrant and luminous colors. However, I believe the real strength lies in balance: pairing bold tones with more delicate shades creates a contemporary elegance.

Are you seeing a growing preference for smooth, clean surfaces, or for textures and intricately worked fabrics?
I think both directions are important, but textures and elaborate techniques are certainly among the most distinctive aspects of my style. At the same time, I like to alternate them with more understated surfaces, creating a balance between decorative richness and clean lines.

For your next collection, are you focusing more on prints or solids?
Prints remain a fundamental part of my identity. I love developing exclusive designs inspired by everything around us. At the same time, solid colors are essential for highlighting shapes, fabrics and craftsmanship. My creative exploration is primarily about finding ways for prints and solids to complement one another.

When it comes to finishes and embellishments, which techniques do you find particularly interesting today?
I’m particularly interested in three-dimensional embellishments, laser-cutting techniques and embroidery that becomes an integral part of the garment. I like the idea that a detail is more than simply decorative, that it belongs to the garment itself. Fringes, interlacing and traditional craft techniques reinterpreted in a contemporary way also offer new creative possibilities.

To what extent does eco-design influence your product choices today, and where does it make the greatest difference?
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important. For me, it means, above all, championing Made in Italy, working with Italian suppliers and prioritizing quality and longevity.

I believe in garments that can be worn for several seasons, moving beyond the idea of disposable fashion. A carefully managed supply chain, attention to waste reduction and thoughtful packaging choices are therefore important elements of this approach.

Does resortwear help drive sales for your brand? How has your offering evolved in terms of styles and product categories?
Resortwear has been part of our offering for many years. It allows us to bring summer sales forward and continues to deliver satisfactory results.

Over time, our range has expanded into a complete look, appealing to customers who shop ahead, as early as November.

Today, customers are looking for versatile pieces that take them from the beach to drinks or an evening out. That’s why, alongside bikinis and one-piece swimsuits, we develop dresses, kaftans, pants, skirts, shirts and coordinated sets that come together to create a complete wardrobe.
